Its early December and the Brazil Kitesurfing Surfari for 2012 has just drawn to an end just in time for people to head home for the Christmas build up. There were 6 people on this trip plus Dom wave coaching and myself.

(The crew on a break during the big downwinder)
The trip started off in my favourite place to kite in the whole world. Its a tidal lagoon where its worth ensuring you have the right tides during the day to get the absolute best out of it.

(Sarah cruising by on the ocean)
The tide rushes in filling the lagoon and creates a perfectly flat playground with sandbanks to launch off or grind if you dare. Mostly we used this time to get the ball rolling on new tricks.

(Bryony having perfected her take off to make her jumps more floaty and easy to grab)
The wind blows enough to be powered on your 10m-12m kites making it feel so much safer to push yourself. This group in particular were working on toeside riding, jumps, back loops, front loops and various transitions. Normally the wind fills in early in the morning, takes a break during the main heat of the day and then picks up again as the land begins to cool in the very early evening. We were treated to phenomenal conditions and there was barely a soul on the water aside from us.

(Heading in from an evening session at Barra Nova)
Spending 4 days in this beautiful paradise is enough. There isn’t really a lot else to do and it reaches a time where it feels like we need some additional social interaction so in the afternoon of the 4th day we take a transfer to Cumbuco.
Cumbuco is the main place to kite here in Brazil. The town is filled with pousadas, restaurants and bars. The beach is endless and sandy and the water is flat at low tide and choppier in the higher tide. There are downwinders to the lagoons or buggys to the lagoons if you want to save your energy to freestyle further. Here in Cumbuco the group would split in half.

(Craig the hardcore wave rider of the group at ‘Paradise’ in Cumbuco - our very own wave spot with no other kiters.)
3 people would head out for the day in our buggy with Dom and base themselves half way to the lagoon where you can find plenty of waves. This group would unleash the waveboards and get to grips with the wave side of kitesurfing while I would take the other group to the lagoons or out front on the ocean if the tide was right.

(Greg nailing his back loops on the lagoon)
We would continue on the mission of learning new tricks and being able to go for them in less perfect conditions..Having said that here the wind blows around 20 knots and the water is so warm. Its just a matter of learning to get your timing right intermixed with the chop. The kites we used were 8m-10m.
We spent a week based in Cumbuco. In addition to the days on the beach locally we added in a downwinder from Cumbuco to Taiba. With guided buggys for support and both Dom and I on the water we could cruise from point to point riding waves as we went. The aim aside from having fun was to really feel like you were getting to know your kite, its capabilities and how to use your board and relax on it. For the more advanced it was the perfect opportunity to link turns riding the waves. After this day we found the biggest and best churasscaria in Fortaleza to fill our boots gorging ourselves on their delicious ‘eat as much as you can’ meats and salads to replenish the tired, aching muscles.

(After kitesurfing celebration before heading out for a ginormous feed!)
After spending a week in Cumbuco the itchy feet kick in again and the desire to see more of Brazil, so one more time we pack up the bags and head for Paracuru.

(A few coaching tips from the water’s edge at Paracuru)
Paracuru has a lovely flat water bay on the inside and a reef on the out. Its an incredible place to mix the sessions with wave riding and freestyle. There is a restaurant directly on the beach where you can base yourselves and refresh on coconut milk, water or cool beer as the sun goes down. The vibe is tranquillo and exactly what the group were needing after a solid 10 days of riding with just one day off. There is more coaching to be had, but its more relaxed now. There are a lot of tired bods so its more about seeing what the group are doing on the water and providing coaching tips to suit.

(Andy eying up the shore break at the end of the downwinder.)
I’m not sure if their are a group of people who kited harder in those two weeks then Bryony, Greg, Andy, Sarah, Craig and Rich! All 6 for sure will be enjoying a few days away from the beach after this. It was once again a pleasure to be coaching by day and having a few local caipirinhas by night while enjoying a tonne of food to replace lost energies!
Next up we have a wave riding holiday in South Africa that Dom Moore is running. The dates are 13th - 19th January with the option to extend your stay by a few days and continue to share the house and the cars with the fellow kitesurfing companions or I am running my own South Africa adventure for 2 weeks from 27th January which is mainly freestyle based. if you would like to take part then please drop us an email there are a couple of spots left on both courses.
