Jo has been kitesurfing since 2001 when kitesurfing really took off in the UK. She came from a background of gymnastics and trampolining so although it took Jo a while to pick up the wind side of the sport it wasn’t too long before she was learning tricks amongst the top kitesurfers in the world.
In 2003 Jo picked up her first sponsorship deal with Cabrinha, but it wasn’t until 2006 when Naish and Protest Boardwear took Jo on to their international team giving her the opportunity to compete on the world tour. In Jo’s first 3 years as a professional kitesurfer she became 2 x British Champion and ranked number 4 on the PKRA World Tour. Jo continued to compete on the World Tour until 2008 and now rides at a professional level with Naish and Prolimit in support writing for magazines such as Kiteworld, Kitesurf, Kitegirl and more. Jo organises movies and photos for her sponsors and other riders and organises demo’s of the latest kit from her sponsors. From time to time Jo takes on a competition as a way to monitor her level and keep it up there with the best. To find out more about Jo as a professional kitesurfer visit www.jowilson.com.
At the age of 29 Jo set up her kitesurfing coaching business to set about coaching young people and helping them to progress in the sport and also to help people build their confidence to become stronger, more independant kitesurfers on the water.
“I have always had an interest in coaching. The lack of it is noticeable and the need for it is critical. Between training and competition I didnt have the time to run specific courses, but I enjoyed to help people who I met along my travels out of that dreaded plateau and back on the path of learning.”
Jo has coached many people from competition riders to the military kitesurfing teams and runs kitesurfing coaching holidays for everyday kitesurfers who are looking to improve.
Since 2009 Jo’s business has gone from strength to strength running regular kitesurfing coaching trips around the UK and the World choosing each location based on her extensive experience within the sport. Each location is chosen with safety at the foremost of her mind and the trips are only run in the peak of the windy season for each location. Taking a coaching holiday with Jo Wilson Coaching will give youthe best possible chances of great conditions allowing you to feel safe on the water and therefore happy to allow yourself to progress under her instruction. She knows where to go and how to avoid the crowds to ensure you a trip of a lifetime.
“The kitesurfing coaching courses are designed to progressively build up moves allowing you to learn in a fun and safe manner eliminating the fear factor as much as possible, but whether you just need a rocket up your ass to take on the next move or you need a few tips, video coaching or a whole new strategy then my kitesurfing coaching will help you. My motto is to keep things fun, energetic but effective because you ride the best when you are enjoying yourself.”
