Soma Bay 2011

The crew have arrived for my first week of coaching in Soma Bay, Egypt! The water is quiet and the wind nuking. The forecast is amazing and my prediction is 30 knots tomorrow and sunday then 20 knots monday and tuesday. Would be tempted to say the wind will take a day off on weds, but you never know! I’ll keep you posted on my prediction skills.

I have a crew of 6 people on the course plus one more taking beginners lessons. They are of varying levels all back looping and jumping then a few who are landing some more tricks too. We are in a great beach for learning the technical stuff such as front rolls, transitions, unhooking and kite loops, but there will be some fun times of jumping beach starts and the famous willy one foot wonder award. I think Im going to make this more of a challenge this year, so lets wait and see!

Will send you a piccy as soon as I have one. 2 spaces left for my 2nd holiday 1-8th July 2011. £650 for all excl flights.

Back from Weymouth and off to Fleetwood

I just returned from the 2nd of my short burst kitesurfing coaching sessions trips down in Portland, Weymouth. The sun shone high and the wind blew around 15 knots. I had 10 people of varying levels over the course of the weekend and every one seemed to have a lot of fun and learned some new tricks. The WPKSC were great to work with and Paracademy also. The response was fantastic and I hope to get back down there is the Autumn for some more of the same. This weekend I am heading to Fleetwood for some Northern action. See you soon.

Amazing New Holiday to Brazil

I am really please to introduce the first Jo Wilson Coaching holiday to Brazil with a twist. This is the first of my holidays where not only will I be coaching but guiding too. With Brazil being so far away and host to a whole world of epic kitesurfing spots it seems a shame to head all that way and offer you 7 days of coaching all in one place.

Instead I have come up with and packaged together what I myself would choose as a dream kitesurfing trip! Its an unbeliable action packed adventure including flat water lagoons, short and long downwinders, wave riding and for those feeling more adventurous even a flatwater lagoon with sand banks made for grinding - won’t damage the board, but the competition is on to who ends up the most sandy sandman/woman 2011.

Brazil offers fantastic kitesurfing with reliable wind, great parties, fabulous food plus cheap and world class full body massages. You will arrive and think you’ve died and gone to heaven! Rack up the kitesurfing hours, fulfill your kitesurfing potential by allowing me to coach you through your own goals and then even I might let you have a little party at the start, middle and end to reward your successes. Epic Conditions in North Wales

So Im sat here on the sofa recovering from a 4 day coaching holiday in North Wales. I wonder what the girls who were actually doing all the kitesurfing are thinking/doing.

The trip was for 4 days only and it was the first of the Girl Only Holidays that I embarked on. I had Johara Sykes Davies coaching too and 5 very determined girls all with very different backgrounds.

When the forecast came through none of us could believe our luck as after a quiet few weeks on the water the forecast finally changed. I seriously thought someone was playing a joke. 20-25mph and 100% sunshine for the whole duration of the trip! I didn’t think it could be true! However it was!

The girls were all at a range of levels starting with riding along but not staying upwind, then next girls were trying toeside, the next on from that was jumping, then rotations and finally the last but not least girl was going for unhooked tricks. There were two coaches to make up for the variation of levels and it worked really well.

The coaching varies between hanging out on the beach and giving tips while the kite is in the air. Alternatively one of the girls might be asked to land her kite while something more complicated was explained.

A lot of the sessions were filmed, so video playback was a large feature and sometimes the videos could be shown between breaks on the beach so that they can see what they were doing right or wrong straight away.

Evening times were spent recovering, stretching, eating, drinking and laughing our socks off at each others fortunes and mishaps! The sunsets were incredible and we were even able to squeeze in a bbq at one great sunset.

On the final day the wind eased off which was fortunate for everyone’s aching muscles. It gave us an opportunity to practise self landing and self launching and how to deal with your kite if you become unhooked (accidentally or on purpose)! Always useful info, but perhaps not what you want to be thinking of when the sun is shining and the water white capping. It was a perfect relaxed ending to a fast paced long weekend!

Altogether there was 4 fun packed days of kitesurfing on the trot. 7 girls from all over the country and a hell load of kiting madness! Was brilliant coaching you all and thank you to Johara for working so hard!!

Next up are my short burst sessions! Portland 14/15th May! Ive ordered the wind and the sunshine, watch out its going to be bomber!!

UK Short Burst Sessions

Spring is here and its almost time for my UK tour. The aim of my tour is to travel around the UK and hook up with the local kitesurfing shops to offer professional advanced kitesurfing coaching for people who can already kite but would like to improve their level.

(Owen from Blackpool enjoying his first jumps)

The courses are 3 hours long and there are a maximum of 4 places available on each. Many people are rusty from having not kitesurfed so much during the winter or often people are stuck in a rut and not sure how to improve. These courses are designed to give you the tips you need to progress to give your season a flying start. I would like to coach you through the stages of back loops or front loops, jump transitions or for example the basis to kite loops, or unhooking. I really just want you to have the best season of kiting ever. The courses cost £65 per person and are brilliant fun, exhilarating, may be a little nerve racking but dont worry I’ll take you through it stage by stage so you can build your confidence throughout the session.

I will be starting on the 23rd April and running until the end of May. You can see more by clicking on here.

Locations I will be visiting are:

Barrow in Cumbria - 23 and 24th April

Portland in Dorset - 14 and 15th May

Fleetwood/Blackpool - 21 and 22nd May

Southampton - 28 - 30th May.

The courses will have a timing schedule that I will be trying to keep to, but I will be as flexible as possible over the weekend to score the best of the wind and tides on offer. If there isn’t any wind forecasted then you will be able to book on to any other UK short burst session course through 2011 plus I will be setting up one spare date. Get ready to rock the waters of the UK this season and hope to see you soon.

South Africa Adventure 2011

I have just got back home after a fantastic week of coaching in langebaan. 4 guys and 1 girl headed over from the UK. I arranged transport from the airport for them to come up to Langebaan where I had rented a 5 bedroom holiday house over looking Langebaan Lagoon. The house was pimp with massage showers and jacuzzi baths, a huge living room and a giant balcony with bbq area ideal for stretching in the mornings and evenings.

We had prime view for when the wind picked up and just like clock work the wind came in everyday somewhere between 18knots and 25 knots and even 30+ knots on the last evening for sunset sessions.

There was a range of levels from the crew. Jamie had had the least time on the water in the passed and as such was working on some transitions and jumping. Roz was busting back rolls, front rolls and some transitions. Matt was unhooking and pulled his first raileys, back rolls, front rolls, f16′s and was working on surface handle passes, big kite loops as well as air handle passes. His arms were falling off by the last day.

James was working on jump transitions, back rolls and front rolls and kite loops and Nick was working on boosting higher, landing his front rolls and the beginnings of unhooking as well as kite loops.

Throughout the week we mixed up eating South African steak in meat specialty restaurants, braai’s (bbq) and some good old home cooking!

We stretched twice daily and did some extra morning exercises, so a healthy holiday was had by all… well that is until the last night where the only thing healthy was the volume of rum we all drank! I had a fantastic time coaching everyone and look forward to another week out here at the same time next year! South Africa Rocks! That is for sure!!
